At the height of the last ice age, about 20,000 years ago, the sea level was 120 m below its level today and it also was about 22km away so nothern Adriatic was a grassy plain. Korcula became an island about 10,000 years ago.

The cave was inhabited by humans as far back as the Upper Paleolithic period, around 20,000 years ago, and continued to be used by early civilizations through the Bronze Age. The cave provided shelter for prehistoric humans, and its location on a hill above the town of Vela Luka offered protection and a strategic vantage point. This makes it one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Adriatic region.
The Discoveries
